Become a Civic Tech Fellow: Join Open Sprints 2025

Open Sprints: Civic Tech Hackathon is back for its second year, bringing together passionate teams dedicated to building open-source solutions for the public good. Join us in creating impactful projects that can drive real change in communities!

This program creates a supportive space where aspiring tech professionals can develop their skills on meaningful civic projects that address real community needs.

Civic Tech Fellows: Get free admission hackathon ticket, team merch, prizes, and pizza on us!

• A Tech Gathering for Social Good. Flex your skills, network with peers, work on open source projects (dataviz, chatbot, research, design and code)
• Convene with the community. We’re setting up infrastructure to impact citywide change via Equitable Mapping sprint activities
• Join a coalition of allies. From university students, grassroots teachers, tech workers, to mentors from NY tech orgs. Show your support for BIPOC women and femmes!

We’re looking for civic hackers, designers, developers, researchers and data scientists who are passionate about making a difference through tech. Join us in-person or virtually.

Who is Eligible?

• Recent Grads: Whether you’ve recently graduated in research, product design, software engineering, or data science, your fresh perspective and skills are exactly what we need to help drive these projects forward.
• Mid-Career Professionals: If you're a seasoned professional with experience in product design, software engineering, or data science, we encourage you to apply. Share your knowledge and guidance with the next generation of technologists while contributing to the development of solutions that matter.

Event Details

Open Sprints opens the program with a hackathon kickoff event in New York City. We bring together teams working on open-source projects for public good.

Project Highlights: Building for Social Impact

• Project Great Dane: Dive into New York City's open data through opendata.nyc and collaborate with experts to develop innovative, equitable maps that empower NYC's diverse communities. Existing research work in critical areas such as heat vulnerability index, health impact of air pollution, or community health profile are good examples of data-driven design where using open data can make an impact.
